Hello and welcome to another episode of the Modern Mamas Podcast.
It's Jess here and surprised we're doing another kind of differently, something I've never done before, and I have one of my really good friends, Becca Roses here with me as a guest host today. Hi, Becca.
Becca Roses: Hello. How are you?
Jess Gaertner: Doing good. We are doing good. We just a quick update for everyone tuning in if you've missed it on social media or in the Patreon community where we [00:02:00] recorded, Laura recorded with me a a quick little kind of update on what's been going on their world.
I don't wanna share too many details here, but Rusty had to have. kind of emergency surgery a week or two ago, and his recovery has been pretty significant and he's super strong. Everything's great. It's just, you know, he had major surgery, so they're just taking some time the Bruner's to kind of make sure that he is healing properly and resting.
And you know, Laura's got her hands full. She's got a great community locally, but she's got her hands full, you know, caring for Rusty and caring for the girls. So we're just rolling with it and we've, I've got a great co-host today. I have like, I feel like we have no shortage of things to talk about and Becca, you've been on before.
Becca Roses: So yes, I have.
Jess Gaertner: Your expertise is epigenetics. You've worked with me, worked with Tim. We actually have recorded a second episode, a follow up episode. We're not gonna chat about epigenetics today, actually. We're just gonna kind of. Shoot the breeze, but we have another [00:03:00] episode that's going to go live soon. I feel like it's soon.
I don't know off the top of my head, but that's gonna be all about kind of like the follow up to all of me implementing all of your recommendations and what that looks like and stuff. So I'm excited for everyone to tune in for that. But today we're just kicking it.
Becca Roses: I love it.
Jess Gaertner: And before we jump in, I'm going to, because it's been a while since we're able to do this, so we have quite a few.
I want to welcome four new Patreon members to our Patreon Modern Mamas Patreon community. We've got Helene, I think I'm saying that right, Helene, what a beautiful name. That's just like a classically I beautiful name Helene Barnes. We've got Emily Schribling, Katie Wheaton and Colleen Geiger and oh my gosh, I know all those ladies at least via like the socials and I'm so, so excited.
They're in our community and that place is growing, man. It is really, it's exciting. Yeah, it's really, really growing. And do you have a Patreon community?
Becca Roses: I do not. No. Should I get one?
Jess Gaertner: I mean, I think youI should get a podcast.
Becca Roses: I [00:04:00] know you keep telling me that.
Jess Gaertner: I told you that before. It's just a matter of time.
Becca Roses: I mean, I'm here with my microphone now.
We might as well, might as well talk about that.
Jess Gaertner: I mean, even if it was you just like, you know, short tidbits of like you chatting about stuff. I feel like, I don't know, there's something really special about the like verbal, like the audio medium, especially if you have the gift of gab. Like do you feel like you have, you're a talker?.
Becca Roses: Definitely.
I mean, it's not even a question.
Yeah, exactly.
Jess Gaertner: So I, I vote, yes, I vote 2023. 2024. Becca's gonna have a podcast. Would it be just about epigenetics, do you think? Or what, what do
you think it would be about?
Becca Roses: I don't know!, I mean, it's so funny. I've been like, I've talked to so many different people about this over. The past couple years, friends have been like, do you wanna do a podcast?
And I'm like, I dunno. Do I wanna add that to my plate right now? But it's so much fun every time I get. Get on and talk to people like you, and it's just, it's so much fun. So who knows? I mean, just, [00:05:00] you never know. I'll put it on my vision board and see what comes from it.
Jess Gaertner: Yes. Oh my gosh. I'm, I'm, I mean, no pressure, but I'm calling it like at some point
Becca Roses: You heard it here first, folks, first.
Jess Gaertner: It's going to happen. Oh my goodness. Okay, good. I needed that laugh today. I, I. I, I've, I'm no shortage of laughter in my life, but I don't know. Today has been one of those days where I had, and I know you've got, I mean, you're doing a lot and so you probably feel this, but it was just like, you know, get the kids out the door.
I need to like feed myself. I need to go. I've been doing chiropractic care and that's like in New Braunfels, which is like 45 minutes away, so like go there. I had to run an errand while I was there because the last time we were there, my kid, my kiddo Cammy left her shoes and it's been. At a friend's house and like, oh my gosh.
I don't know if you can relate, but
Becca Roses: Oh yes, definitely.
Jess Gaertner: She, like every morning she's like, well, the first morning she was like, where are my shoes? And I was like, I don't [00:06:00] know. And she's, so we realized we left them at our friend's house and we wouldn't be able to get them. And it was just like a complete and utter meltdown.
Becca Roses: And it's like THE shoes, right? Like the only shoes she wants to wear. Of course,
Jess Gaertner: I don't know if anyone else's kids go through that, but like, we're still in that phase. I don't know. Yeah. When that phase actually ever, I mean, you have, how old are your kiddos?
Becca Roses: Dragon. My oldest is 11, and then I have an eight year old Andela just turned five this week.
So yeah, I'm kind of running the gamut and I feel like they all have their things right. Yeah. That they like have to have with them or on them or, and it changes. It changes. Mm-hmm. Like we can't keep up as parents. We're just like, okay, what is it this week?
Jess Gaertner: That sounds, that is incredibly relatable. Yes.
Yeah, because like these shoes, these specific shoes that I'm thinking of haven't been worn in months and since she refound them again, she was like, can love these shoes so much. And like literally, I remember her being like, I hate these shoes. I never wanna wear 'em again months ago.
Becca Roses: Yeah, we cannot, [00:07:00] we cannot keep up.
Jess Gaertner: Ugh. It's, it's a wild ride. But you know, it's all good. The shoes are now back in our possession. And then it was like, while. coming back from the chiropractor, I'm like, I need to go to Costco. And then we were Voxing. Cause I was like, I don't know if I'm gonna make it a time cause the traffic's crazy. But everything's fine.
I am like flirting dangerously with my third cup of iced coffee for the day. And oh, you know, you know, because this is an epigenetic thing. I shouldn't be playing fast and loose for the most part with caffeine, less late in the day. But I'm just, I'm walking on the wild side.
Becca Roses: You're doing it. Some days you gotta do that, you know?
Jess Gaertner: I know, I know.
Becca Roses: Just go with it.
Jess Gaertner: You were the one who also introduced me to the Stardust app. Oh my gosh.
Becca Roses: Oh my gosh. It's so fun.
Jess Gaertner: It's great. I mean, you posted to that and I was like, what is this app? I need to know more.
Becca Roses: It's incredible.
Jess Gaertner: It, it's so great cuz I've actually been looking for another like period tracker app.
The one I was using before. I just [00:08:00] hate it. It was like inflexible and I feel like it wasn't giving me like enough information. So you posted about it and then I was like, oh my gosh, I love it. Cuz it's also like synced to like the moon cycles, which is, yeah, which is fascinating. So not only is it telling you like where you are in your own cycle, it's like kind of telling you. where the moon is and how that might be affecting things. It's so good. And so every time I post about it, I also get people being just like, what is this?
Becca Roses: I know. I feel like they need to be a sponsor on the podcast because it's amazing, but for real, like I was using a tracker that I just didn't love cuz it didn't give you enough information about like what your actual hormones were doing and I'm like, I mean, why do I care if my period starts in five days if I don't know anything about like what's going on with my body at the time?
Jess Gaertner: Right, right.
Becca Roses: You know? Right. And this one is just so neat and it gives you like really cheeky
Jess Gaertner: so cheeky.
Becca Roses: You know, statements every day.
I'm like, I love it. Oh my gosh. That's totally like Bluey coming out. Like we watch Bluey so much over here.
Jess Gaertner: So do we.
Becca Roses: Everything is cheeky now, [00:09:00] and I really do think that, I was talking to a friend about this today. The fact that like we as women aren't as in tune with our hormones as we should be, is because we just didn't grow up like hearing about them.
And when we can sync up with our hormones, like not from a, like a cycle syncing, like let's do all these different things like seeds and stuff, which I think can be cool, but I just like knowing where I'm at because it's like when I'm in that place where I just don't wanna do anything and I'm lacking motivation.
Mm-hmm. When I can see where my hormones are, like nine times outta 10, mostly like 10 times outta 10. It's actually because my hormones are in a certain spot. Right. And I'm like, oh, there we go. Yeah. Like I'm gonna give myself grace now because like it's not just, it's not me. Like it's my hormones.
Jess Gaertner: Yes, totally. It's so fascinating. I'm looking at it right now. Cause I'm like, oh. I'm dripping in motivation, physical strength, and problem solving and damn, it looks good on you. That's like my vibe today and I feel that like I'm, I love it as, as much as like it feels kind of chaotic, I [00:10:00] feel very able to take on the strain, whereas like last week, you know, I was right smack in the middle of my cycle.
I was just like, someone look at me the wrong way and I'm like, why do you hate me so much?
Becca Roses: Yeah, like gimme a, yeah, gimme a blanket and like a piece of like a piece of chocolate and like 87 glasses of tea in a bed, you know?
I
Jess Gaertner: know. It's so funny. We were laughing last night cuz. I was just joking with Tim.
I was like, how do you like me best? Do you like me? Like when I get dressed, do you like me in yoga pants? You know, do you like with makeup? Like this is a loaded question, right? Because like, no matter what he says, I'm gonna be like, oh, so you don't like me when I'm, don't wear makeup or whatever. But anyways, he, he, you know, said the standard like, I like you in all ways. And then he was like, except for when. Except for you wear those old bratty sweatpants and my black hoodie. I don't love that look. And I was like laughing because that's like my standard, like when I'm on my period. [00:11:00] I, it's just like everyone in my house. Well now they all know because I'm like, I grabbed Tim's hoodie and that's what I wear.
I put, I put these very specific pairs, pair of sweatpants on because they feel like the fit is just like loose enough to where I don't feel like. Well, you know, when you just feel like compressed,
Becca Roses: So like relatable. I, I walk around my house saying like, I feel like a literal potato today, guys. Yeah. Like, I just need to be left alone. Like, I'm just, I'm a potato.
Jess Gaertner: That's exactly the accurate description. And I told him, I was like, literally, That hoodie and those sweat sweatpants are my outward projection of the, the way that I'm feeling on the inside. And we just, yeah, he just laughed cuz he was like, okay, I get it.
Becca Roses: so now that's your tell like he can just like, he's gonna see that and just like, okay, I'm going the other way.
Jess Gaertner: I know. And he's so good about it too. He realizes it before. I do usually. I mean, now again, like you mentioned, like I'm getting much more in tune. With just like, it's crazy cuz I'm about to be 40 and you would think like this [00:12:00] is, this is, I mean, I've been having my period since I was what, like 13, 14?
I can't remember when exactly. But like you think that by this time, every single month for the last however many years of my life, that I would be a little bit more in tune with it. But it's kind of like you said, it's just like we. I mean, growing up it was definitely an an embarrassing thing for me. This was something that like, no, my family didn't talk about and no one in my like, Even in my social circle in high school or college or whatever, like, it wasn't like common conversation. And it's not like it is, I mean, I guess we're talking about it pretty openly right now on a podcast where like thousands of people listen to, but you know, it just, it's like, it's not everyday conversation, but I feel like the older I get, the more I want to know how it affects me because the more I like see it, you know?
Does that make sense?
Becca Roses: Oh, it makes total sense.
I mean, I was like talking. Periods to my sons the other day and I was like, they're not too young to learn about. Cause they're gonna be around people that experience this. And I want them to be equipped to be able to handle [00:13:00] it in a much different way than I experienced when I was a girl and like super embarrassed and like you know, you have that day where you have to tie a sweater around your waist . And you're just like, all the boys are snickering. And I'm just like, No, it stops here. Like we can change the next generation. And I agree. It's like the older we get, I feel like the more unapologetic we are about things.
And I think it's beautiful that at the same time we can be also still learning more about our bodies, even as we like, like you said, like we're in our late thirties, mid thirties, forties. Like we're in the stage where we can actually make an influenceon those around us.
Jess Gaertner: Absolutely. And I feel that too.
Like with Bear, who's nine, almost 10, like he knows, I mean, for his understanding, like he understands that like women have periods and that means that they bleed every single month. Like he's still a little bit like, okay, that's pretty much all I wanna know. But like he,
Becca Roses: He's not going to be shocked by it.
Jess Gaertner: He gets it. Yeah. Yeah. It's a thing. Yeah, totally. And you know, he has a sister, a little sister, [00:14:00] and he's gonna be, Yeah, it's gonna be interesting, uh, for sure because Cammy's already, I would say, my more emotionally volatile of the two of them. And sometimes he just, like, she is, you know, really she's expressing herself and you can see in his eyes that he's like, Oh my gosh.
Like what is happening? Like, I don't understand. I'm like, just wait, buddy. Oh, just wait. Yeah, it's gonna be fun.
Oh man. Okay, so we've already talked about periods. My vision for this podcast is I just wanna like pick your brain on, like, I always love when people on podcasts share about like what they're listening to, what they're reading, what they're drinking, what they're eating, what their favorite product is, like all that.
Also, do you want, can, can I. Pick your brain?
Becca Roses: Yeah, do it. I, I love talking about this kinda stuff.
Jess Gaertner: Okay, so first and foremost, I wanna know two things. What are you watching right now? And or , if you're not watching anything, if you're [00:15:00] not like hooked onto anything, what is like your favorite, it can be show or TV or, or show or movie or both Favorites and current.
What's on your, your queue? What's in your queue?
Becca Roses: My queue. So together, Doug and I, my husband, we're watching Ted Lasso, of course.
Jess Gaertner: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
Becca Roses: It's like the best
Jess Gaertner: You're caught up?
Becca Roses: We're caught up. We're caught up. We just caught up and I think what it comes out again next Wednesday. Yeah. Or Tuesday.
Yeah. And then we also got really into Shrinking. Did you watch that?
Jess Gaertner: Oh my gosh. Loved that show and I was. I would see like kind of, I would see it on the Apple TV like screen and I'm like, eh, yeah, whatever. Like wasn't super into it. Yeah. And then we started watching it. It's so good.
Becca Roses: Oh my gosh, so good.
And it's like, I don't know why, I guess I just needed like the laughs because it's so funny. But it also takes like kind of a dark,
you know, there's emotion, there's emotion, there's emotion, there's a wide range of emotions. So
that's what I'm into right now. [00:16:00] All time. Like anytime like I'm alone and like no one else is in the house, which is rare.
But I did have like a solo weekend last weekend, just randomly like two days. My mom had the kids and my husband was outta town, and I was like, I'm literally going to order takeout. Like binge watch tv.
We all need that. . I go back to two shows. Grey's Anatomy. I know it's been on for like 87 years, but still like Grey's Anatomy, it's still on.
It's so dramatic. It's ridiculous, but I love it. It's like a guilty pleasure. Yeah. And then Gilmore Girls. Like don't, yeah, I just, I love it. I wanna live in Stars Hollow, like just take me there and I will just walk around with all the coffee and all the fall leaves like falling
around me. Great. Oh my gosh.
Classics.
Laura Bruner: Have you heard of Foria?? It's a company that is loved far and wide by folks who've had their sex lives transformed by these holistic, powerful products, and now I see why they've been especially wonderful through this postpartum period for me, when a little extra lubrication is key. Rusty and I have used the intimacy sex oil with C B D, and it's the perfect lube to provide all natural moisture with 400 [00:17:00] milligrams of broad spectrum C b, D to enhance arousal, soothe, and excite. We also love the awaken arousal oil. And of course, all Foria of your products are free of added chemicals and only made from two organically grown ingredients.
Jess Gaertner: And you know what's sexy? Discomfort, free, top notch, pleasurable intimacy. I wanna be totally honest. Being married 10 years plus two kids later, sex and intimacy has definitely seen its ups and downs for us. But there's no shame in exploring different ways and products that enhance our sexual experiences. Which is why we're so excited to announce we're partnering with Foria a company using all natural and plant-based ingredients to intensify sexual pleasure and relieve discomfort.
We are all about the awaken arousal oil with C B D, which is a topical oil to enhance pleasure, ease, discomfort, and help increase sensitivity for people with vulvas. That's me. You can use it solo or with a partner, and it is next level. Sexy time has definitely leveled up over here. Plus C B D used topically helps increase blood flow, relaxed muscles [00:18:00] and ease, tension, and manage discomfort gently and naturally.
All around wins.
So awesome.
Laura Bruner: Friends, I can't recommend Foria enough. I think it's time to treat yourself to deeper, fuller pleasure. Jess Gaertner: You are? I think so. You know, do you know Melissa Guevara?
Becca Roses: Yes, I do. I love her.
Jess Gaertner: You're like the same people, at least television wise because she's still watching Grey's Anatomy and she loves it!
Becca Roses: oh my gosh, I think I didn't know this about her. Now we need to chat all about it.
Jess Gaertner: Yeah. And she's Same. Gilmore Girls is like one of her. It's like one of those, I feel like Gilmore Girls is one of those soothing shows you can put [00:19:00] on anytime.
Becca Roses: Anytime the background. Yeah. And like just you feel better after watching it.
Jess Gaertner: Totally. And I have like a kind of a sad, I mean I, it's, I guess it's like a dirty little secret I watched almost all of Gilmore Girls until like maybe the last, I think it was like the last season I did not watch and I haven't watched the like re the refresh that they did. So I don't actually even know what happens in the end.
The end, at the end of
Becca Roses: show. The last season was great, but like the refresh, I gotta say I was really disappointed in the, like, just everything about it.
Jess Gaertner: The whole entire thing?
Becca Roses: The whole entire thing. And like, I feel bad saying this, but like the acting, I was like, what happened to you guys? It's almost like they forgot their characters. I don't know.
It was strange, but yeah.
Jess Gaertner: Oh, okay. Well then I don't feel like I'm missing out on too much then. No, I haven't watched it.
Okay, so we've got 10. Okay, so 10 outta 10. recommend Shrinking if you are, guys. Yeah, whoever's tuning in if you're looking for a show. It's so hilarious. Harrison Ford, I mean, I don't know how he, he's, [00:20:00] he's older now, like, he's like almost his eighties, I think like, or he's at least in his seventies. And then who's the guy, I think his name was like Jason, something
Becca Roses: Jason sudakis?. Is that wrong?
Jess Gaertner: No, no, no. Sudakis?. Yeah. No, no. Sudakis is lasso, right? No.
Becca Roses: Oh my gosh. Yeah. I'm mixing up my, my Jason's over here. Jason,
Jess Gaertner: Jason, Jason. Something.
Oh my gosh. We, oh my gosh. We can move on until we figure this out. He is wildly pop. He's been in lots of funny movies. He's
so, oh, Jason Siegel. Siegel. Yes. Yeah.
Yes. He's so funny. So funny. And then the Gabby, the girl who plays Gabby, I don't know where she came from, but she was hilarious.
Becca Roses: She has gotta be a comedian. I freaking love her. I'm like, are you? She's gotta be in standup or something. Like, she's so funny.
Jess Gaertner: She's hilarious. And all of her outfits were like amazing because, so have you had your color done?
Becca Roses: I have not, but I want to like so bad. Cause I'm like, what season am I, y'all, I [00:21:00]need to figure this out. Like somebody
Jess Gaertner: And like, not that far from Jordan who did my first
Becca Roses: I'm not Yeah. Cause she's in College Station, right?
Jess Gaertner: Yes.
Becca Roses: So I'm like, probably like an hour and a half away. Okay. Mother Mother's Day, not
mother's.
Jess Gaertner: Anyway, that was a long roundabout way of saying, I think all of the, most of the clothes that Gabby was wearing are winter season clothes. They're like, Like, oh yeah. Punchy colors. So I was obsessed. I'm obsessed with her and I immediately, like I M D B, like Googled her and like, who is she? What has she been in?
She hasn't been in that much, but really she's, this is probably like probably a breakout deal for her, so
Becca Roses: Oh yeah, she's gonna go, she's gonna go places.
Jess Gaertner: Oh yeah. Okay. So we've got tv. What is your favorite movie of all time? Do you like movies?
Becca Roses: I do. I like movies. I am, y'all are gonna think this is so weird, but I really love the Count of Monte Christo.,
Jess Gaertner: what version, when did that come [00:22:00] out?
Becca Roses: It, it's so old now, but like it was so good and I loved the book, so I'm a big reader and I loved the book. I read it in high school. I wrote a paper on it. I know I'm such a nerd. I'm so like, I'm outing myself right now. Huge nerd. My English teacher. She was the one who told me that I could be a writer and I was like, I so inspired.
And the movie, I just feel like they did such a good job with it. You've gotta watch it if you haven't watched it. It's like a, it's a classic, definitely favorite movie. The Princess Bride is right up there with it. I know you probably wouldn't guess that. Those Princess Bride. Yeah. It's just so good. I just, I really like, cuz it's like fantasy action, love story.
It's like all the things that you kinda want in a movie.
Jess Gaertner: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Yeah. What, when, when did Count of Monte Cristo come out? Is it black and.
Becca Roses: No.
Jess Gaertner: Is there someone in it that. Would know?
Becca Roses: Jim Cavel.
Jess Gaertner: Oh, okay. Okay.
Becca Roses: He, I mean he does, he's done a lot of things, but yeah, it, I mean the book is old as, as old as heck. It's like 1844.
Yeah, but the film was like 2002 it's not that old. .[00:23:00]
Jess Gaertner: Okay. Alright. I'll give it, I'll give it. If you say it's
Becca Roses: If you don't, don't tell me you don't like it. Don't crush my ego.
Jess Gaertner: I still have to watch. I posted the other day for some reason I follow on like book. Bookstagram accounts because I'm also a reader and this, I kept getting all these reels about, oh my gosh, I've already forgotten.
I think you might have commented on this, Pride and Prejudice, all of these like reels from the movie Pride and Prejudice that like Bookstagram accounts were creating and I've never seen it and
Becca Roses: I don't think I have either.
Jess Gaertner: Okay. Okay. Maybe it wasn't you that I definitely wasn't you that was commenting on it then, but like apparently the version, the Pride and Prejudice.
Oh God, what's her name? Brain is on point today.
Becca Roses: Is it the one kira Knightly?
Jess Gaertner: Kira Knightly? Yes. Yes. Apparently the one with her in it is like a fan favorite. So that's on my list. Count of Monte Christo will be on my list. [00:24:00] And Princess Bride, I mean, we've seen.
A million times. Our kids love it. We've quote it all times.
Becca Roses: Our kids love it. It's, it's such a good family movie.
Jess Gaertner: Yeah, it really, really is. Okay, so we got, we got movies, we got TVs. What are you reading? Okay, what, what are you reading And what. What books have you loved? You can do numerous ones.
Becca Roses: I'm reading two books right now.
I can read and then listen to a book, so I can do two at a time if one's audio and one is like physical copy. So I've gotten into the Court of Thorns and Roses series, which I know everybody is like, it's so trending right now, but it's really good y'all. And I didn't think I was like a fantasy book lover, but I am now.
I'm on the second book and it's really thick. Mm-hmm. So I'm about like midway through and I'm just, devouring it every night. Cannot get enough.
Jess Gaertner: That is one of those series just to like insert, I actually, I mean I was reading it before, it was cool. No, I'm just kidding. I know. It was, it had a thing, there was like definitely a big, a [00:25:00] big surge last year, whenever that was, that I read the series, like it's regaining popularity, but it was also very popular whenever I picked it up cuz someone else had recommended it to me.
But it is again, same. I'm not really. A fantasy. Person, but every, every so often, like I'll pick up one that has, you know, it's like a series and it just sucks you in.
Becca Roses: And it does, and you ca you have to see it through.
Jess Gaertner: Yeah, you have to see it through. But it's also such an easy read. It's not like, okay, yeah, I'm flogging through this.
Like, I mean, it's good. It's, I've heard it's gonna be a Hulu show.
Becca Roses: I heard that too, which is very exciting. I know. So you read all five?
I've read them all, yes.
Oh my gosh.
Jess Gaertner: I mean, I, it same, it was like one of those situations where I'm like, staying up way too late reading these books because
a hundred percent
you lose track of time. You're just like sucked in.
Yes, totally.
I'm like ignoring my family. I'm like, please leave me alone. Yes. Okay. So Court of Thornes and Roses, 10 outta 10, [00:26:00] recommend what else you got?
Becca Roses: Yes, totally recommend. I'm listening to The Eight Girl. It's by Ruth Ware. I like her a lot. Mm-hmm. ,
Jess Gaertner: I read that one.
Becca Roses: Oh, you did?
Jess Gaertner: I did. It was like one of my first books of the year. I'm like, you have good reads right now. It was, it started slow for me. How are you?
Becca Roses: It did, it did well. So I'm listening to it. So it's, it's a long, like, it's a really long listen. Mm-hmm. It started slow. Now I'm really getting into the point where I'm like, ok, I have to figure out what happened, like who did it. Yeah. But I also like listening to her books because everybody speaks in an English accent and I can't. Do accents. Like I physically cannot do an accent. I, I just can't, like, you could ask me and I would sound so terrible and off. So I love listening to accents cause I'm like, it makes me think that I could do it, but then I try to mimic it and I'm so bad at it.
Jess Gaertner: Not your, not your skillset?
Becca Roses: Not my skillset. Like a hundred percent Could never, could never be one of those people that like imitates others.
Jess Gaertner: That's funny. Okay, so it Girl and Court of Thornes & Roses. What's your favorite book?
Becca Roses: Favorite book of all time. [00:27:00] Definitely if I'm talking older book Count of Monte Christo? Mm-hmm. If I'm talking newer book, have you read? Oh my gosh, it's super huge. I have it on my shelf and, oh, the Gold Finch. Have you read the Gold Finch?
Jess Gaertner: No, but I have. It's a movie. There's a movie, right? I almost watched the movie, movie the other day. Movie.
Becca Roses: There is a movie. The movie was good. Ok. It was, it didn't do it justice. My sister and I actually both read it and then watched it together and we were like, oh, dang it.
They didn't, they like left out some really key points, but of course the book is like huge. And so you can't, you can't depict that in a movie.
Jess Gaertner: Is it sad? Is it a mystery? What is it?
Becca Roses: It's sad. It's like, I guess it's like a coming of age piece maybe, so to speak. Like it follows this boy's life and kind of, he's gone through a lot of trauma and just like really it, it's just really beautifully written.
And then another one that really, that I loved that was a read I did like two years ago was American Dirt. I really loved that book.
Jess Gaertner: My gosh, I haven't read that one either. I. No, I, it,
Becca Roses: It was [00:28:00] heartbreaking.
Jess Gaertner: Was it? Oh
Becca Roses: But like in a way that just like cracks your soul wide open and you just like have this like newfound, I, I don't know, like appreciation and like respect and just perspective on like people that live differently than you do. It was beautiful. I so many books like I made You Go On. Oh my gosh. Like, those are, those are some really ones that stuck out to me.
Jess Gaertner: I think I actually even have American Dirt. I think like we have Do you have like those little library. Around your neighborhood or library? Library. Yeah. They're like in front of someone's house. And then, you know, there's books. We have a bunch of those in our neighborhood. I think I picked it up from one of those little libraries and just have never read it. I like, there you go. I, I go through phases where I'm like, devouring books, like just one after the other. And then I go through phases where I'm like, I, all I wanna do is watch tv.
Yeah. And I don't wanna use my brain. And then also even with the reading, it's like I will do like a thriller and then I'll be like, okay, I need a break from that. I'm gonna do like some [00:29:00] like, kind of like a light romcom. Yeah. And then like cycle through. And sometimes the really heavy books like. I don't know.
Becca Roses: You need a break after that. Yeah, yeah, I know. I get that way too, for sure.
Jess Gaertner: Yeah. Why you looking at, okay, I have to, this is not a new book and it was recommended to me a long time ago, Uhhuh, and it is very racy, but if anyone is looking for, it's also going to be made into a movie. I heard with Anne Hathaway, who is just, I think, gorgeous. Oh yeah. It's called The Idea of You. Have you heard of it?
Becca Roses: Oh, I have not.
Jess Gaertner: I think it was on the, we were in Austin together for a beauty counter retreat with Cassy Uhhuh and all, a bunch of like, the gals were like talking about it. So anyways, I just read it. It's, it's pretty racy, but it's about this mom, she's like a recently divorced mom of like a tween girl and she takes her tween girl to this like boy band concert, like think. One direction. [00:30:00] Yeah. It's like a British boy band and one of the, like, main singers falls in love. They, they, they like have a thing this, oh, she's 40, which, I mean, I'm, is she 40 or is she older than that? Anyways, I'm 40 and I'm like, that's not old. Like, what's wrong with this? But they make it seem like, oh, she's so old for him. He's only 20. Nice. And so it's this kind of, Romance and it was a really good story until the very end and I hated the way that it ended. ,
Becca Roses: oh, I don't love, I don't love it when books do that, when I you like have this ending that you're like, I can't, really accept this.
Jess Gaertner: Really? That's the end, I dunno. Anyway,
so, and I'm gonna add
Becca Roses: to my want to read list though, because, you know, just, just gotta.
Jess Gaertner: Yeah, it's a fun read. It's a fun read. Okay, what else do I wanna know? My gosh, what else did I say? Oh, okay. What are you, what's in your, your beverage cups these days? Do you have multiple beverages?
Becca Roses: Like at least three beverage ,
Jess Gaertner: you've seen that, that Instagramreel?
Becca Roses: It's like the height of luxury or whatever is like having three beverages in front of you at all times [00:31:00] or something like that.
Jess Gaertner: Well, I've seen that one, but I'm talking about the beverage goblin song. Oh my God, it's hilarious. I'm not even gonna try and sing it, but it's like, well, I guess I will try and sing it. The beverage goblin has at least three drinks at a time, and it's like, you know, uh, anyways, I'll send it to you. If anyone else is on Instagram, look for the beverage goblin meme, because that's me. I just laugh because I have, it says one for hydration, one for. energy and one for, I think for just for fun, and that's like pretty much
Becca Roses: I can totally get down with that. Yeah.
Jess Gaertner: Okay. So what are you drinking?
Becca Roses: So I'm always drinking water with element salt in it like always. Mm-hmm. I cycle through which ones I like the best. I'm like a mango chili girl most of the time. But then sometimes I'll get like tired of that and then I'll do raspberry. It just depends on my mood. And then, you know, I've got my olive oil coffee, like every day. Multiple cups a day. Mm-hmm. Most likely. So I have that and I blend it up kind of like a bulletproof.
And then I have been so ab like bubbles. I need bubbles in my [00:32:00] life right now. And so I have been buying cases of the glass bottles of Pellegrino from Costco. Like they're, it's my job. Mm-hmm. Like I have been buying multiple cases a week and I swear we go through like two cases a week between the family cuz everybody loves them and I just, they're so that's definitely a fun beverage because you just feel so. I don't know. It's mineral water. So you just feel like, oh this is like, this is good, but it's also like luxurious. Yeah. Cause it's bubbly. Yeah. And I like will squeeze some lime in it. And actually Melissa showed me that she puts like her element salt into mm-hmm. Bubbly water. And I was like, that is a game changer. So I started sometimes making like a mocktail with it and I'll just like have that when I'm outside in the afternoon and that's like perfection.
Jess Gaertner: Yeah. You have to be careful. Full disclosure, when you put electrolytes into bubbly, Sometimes, most of the time it will explode. Yeah. So you have to leave a lot of room. I'm sure you probably already know this, but,
well, you gotta,
Becca Roses: it almost, you have to pour it like a beer. Mm-hmm. Like, you know, when you're, I dunno if you've ever worked in a bar, but I definitely bartended in my life. Oh yeah. Like [00:33:00]pour it like a draft. Mm-hmm. Yeah. You have to like really get in there and like almost Yeah. Yeah. Kind maneuver it.
Jess Gaertner: Okay. I love it. And then you also, like you do like mushroom. Did you do mushroom coffee? Am I making that up?. Ok. King Coffee. That's right. Yeah.
Becca Roses: The olive oil coffee. I do. It's got reishi in it and so it's, it's basically organic coffee. It's like triple tested for mold, but it also has the reishi spores in it. So I start my day with that every day. And then I usually, Have like an afternoon cup. And since my caffeine genes are like very high metabolism of caffeine, like I had a cup at 7:00 PM last night at baseball practice. Oh. And I didn't. And I like went to bed just normal because I just like, I can cycle through caffeine super quick.
Jess Gaertner: Oh my gosh. You lucky little.
Becca Roses: I know. I know.
Jess Gaertner: But I feel like I used to do that. Like I was thinking about, it's kind of wild to me sometimes to think about high school, Jess, because I would, it was just getting into coffee, and coffee to me was [00:34:00] like frappuccinos from Starbucks, which I mean, hello. They're delicious, but like. I mean, I wouldn't, I wouldn't drink those on the reg now, but like I, we would go, it'd be like me and my friends, like, let's go to Starbucks. It's like seven pm on a Saturday or 10 o'clock, you know, whatever time you close. And we're getting frappuccinos and like, it's. Not a big deal. And I'm like, yeah, yeah, unfazed. But you know?
Becca Roses: Unfazed, our, our teenage selves that were probably like moving a hundred miles an hour. I don't know. I don't know how we did it.
Jess Gaertner: I don't either. Oh my gosh. It makes me tired to think about living like that, but, okay, so you've got, we've got your lowdown on your drinks, and then I wanna ask you, yeah, because you're in the health and wellness kind of sphere. Mm-hmm. I wanna hear your take on. A trend, a health and wellness trend that you love currently that's like, you're like, oh yeah, that's great. And then maybe one, I know I'm kind of putting you on the spot, and then maybe one that you have seen lately that you're just like, what in the world that's a [00:35:00] waste of money, a waste of time that doesn't work. Like, just like you're scratching your head about what, what are you saying out there?
Becca Roses: Goodness. Okay. Trends I'm loving. I could think of two right off the bat that I do on the regular that I absolutely love. One of them is sauna. Mm-hmm. Like the sauna. I love it. And I know not everybody has access to one, but I absolutely love a sauna session. Like sweating to me feels so good. I have a sauna blanket and then I'll go to my gym that has a sauna and I love it. But of course, like being in Texas, you can like walk outside in a couple months and is sauna. So we're good there.
Jess Gaertner: A couple?! I'm talking like probably tomorrow.
Becca Roses: I dunno, maybe wishing. I'm like, can it stay nice? No, it can't. I mean, I'm trying to, will it? Yeah. I do also really enjoy red light therapy. I think that that is a great investment. I have a mask that I use because it's a lot cheaper than buying like a big tower. But I would love, like long-term, long-term goals is to have [00:36:00] like a big red light therapy tower like in a sauna in my house. I mean, we're talking like big goals.
Jess Gaertner: Okay. Wait. Oh, wait. Time out. Time out. This is me just being totally clueless. A sauna is the, is different than a red light. Red light or can, are they combined? Like what's the?
Becca Roses: It can be, yeah, they can be. So you can actually use like infrared red light therapy in your sauna. But I love a dry sauna. I think that that's super great. Cause it just gets you, it gets you going, like it gets you sweating, it gets your lymph system moving. All of that, like all the benefits. And then for me, the red light therapy, there's two types of red light. There's the near infrared and then there's the, the far infrared. And they have different, like different benefits, but they actually, like one of 'em will go deeper into your tissue and the other one is more surface level, but they're not hot. Like okay. They're not hot to the touch. They don't like get you sweating so to speak. They actually just kind of like work on your muscles. They work on your, like internally they're, they're awesome.
Jess Gaertner: So you're using it on your face? [00:37:00] Yeah. Just for your face benefit or does that go everywhere? Does the benefit go everywhere else?
Becca Roses: No. This one it can, so you can use it anywhere, but the one I have is like an actual like red light mask and it's, it's great for like basically skincare benefits. Okay. Because it helps to like, you know, reduce. Age spots, all those things like, I don't know, you know, like I'm a skincare junkie, just like you are. Like it's just great. And then like the other types of red light devices that you can get that are like towers and you just sit in front of them and like have your whole body in them. Those actually like penetrate deep down into our cells and like actually boost our mitochondria function. So you can, you can use it as like a targeted support for muscle pain and stuff, or you can use it for beauty benefits or you can actually use it for. Wellness, like true wellness hacking. So love those. Okay. And again, those are not like super accessible. Like I don't have a big red light tower at home, but anytime I can like find a place that has one, like I'll go pay, you [00:38:00] know, like the 40 bucks to do like a 20 minute session mm-hmm. In a red light machine because they're so, they're so good and it can really like reduce inflammation and just like it, it's awesome.
Yeah. I absolutely love it. That sounds amazing. And then something that I think. Like a waste of time. Oh my gosh, this is so hard. I think I wanna go real general here one, cause I, I always like tend to offend people when I say like, what I don't think is worth it.
Jess Gaertner: Maybe, ok, but you'll, I, I know you'll come from a perspective of like, it's not worth, like maybe there's some benefits to it or maybe it's just like not worth the investment. Like in terms of like what you would actually get so, You're not gonna offend anyone? No. Can you give us your, your opinion?
Becca Roses: I'll go, I'll do a two part then. Okay. So two parts of it is like huge extensive morning routines. Mm. Mm-hmm. You know how you see a lot of those, like biohackers or whatever, and they're like, okay, yeah. You get up and [00:39:00] like, You, you journal, you meditate, you go on like a, a mile run. You, I don't know, you do all these things, right? Yeah. And I'm like, I always try to come from a place of like, do you actually have time for all that? Right? Like, I don't, I don't, I do not as somebody that does what I do, like I, I love all those things. Like I love journaling, I love meditating, but I am like, you don't have to have an extensive morning routine to feel like, Supporting your wellness. Mm-hmm. Like, you even do all those things in other pockets of time throughout your day. Mm-hmm. So that always, like, I always see people and they're like, let me share my like 20 step morning routine with you. And I'm like, oh lord. Like can we not?
Jess Gaertner: I love that.
Becca Roses: That always, that always gets me. Or you shared, oh my God, it was so funny you shared that woman, and I can't remember her name, but she's like, hello, I'm an influencer and I'm gonna tell I love her too. Funny cuz I find myself like, oh my gosh, do I do some of those things online? Yeah. Like do I come across like that? But it's hilarious cuz it's true. It's [00:40:00] like let's follow my 50 step nightly routine. Yeah. And it's only gonna take you about four hours
Jess Gaertner: and costs $500
and Yeah. And don't
Becca Roses: have the time. Just go out and make it yourself.
Jess Gaertner: Yeah. I love that. Ri Laster is who you're referencing and she's just like, She's, all of her videos are like, I'm an influencer, and it's, it's all in good fun because yeah, even some of those videos, I'm like, oh, I've said stuff like that before, but like you have to be able to laugh at yourself. Oh my gosh. You do. If you take yourself too, too seriously, then like life is no fun.
Becca Roses: It's so, it's funny and it's relatable and like, yeah. You have to laugh at yourself. You have to have fun. Gosh, I'm trying to think of like another wellness trend that I. I don't follow. The thing with me is that it's hard to subscribe to like anything wholeheartedly unless I'm like, oh, this would definitely work for people. Mm-hmm. And so when it, like, we've talked about this before, but like collagen? Mm-hmm. Like, I think it can have so many benefits for a lot of people, but. A lot of the clients that I see [00:41:00] and myself, like, it's just not a benefit to them. Mm-hmm. And so it can be a waste of money and it can be a waste of time because it is an expensive supplement, but that is definitely not a one size fits all, and it's not a waste of time for somebody that, that it works for.
Jess Gaertner: Mm-hmm. So, mm-hmm. Totally.
Podcast Ad: Hello my loves. Jess here. Have you heard of a favorite things party before? Well, this is like that sort of, except that I'm a party of one, and this favorite item is truly life changing, so maybe that makes it more than a favorite, like a must haveve instead. Okay.
Jess Gaertner: And I love that. I mean, I think that's like. In terms of like following trends, one of the things that, and this is not like a shameless plug, but I'm happy to plug you because it's been life changing. Like knowing your epigenetics and knowing that like you don't have to chase every ch trend that comes [00:43:00] along is like, yeah, my, it's just, it's so empowering and there are certain things, obviously, like you were talking about, you know, infrared for like mitochondria health and stuff like in general, that's probably gonna help pretty much everyone. I mean, would you agree?
Becca Roses: Definitely, yeah. That's something that like no matter what your genes are mm-hmm. Like our mitochondria could use a boost and there's some people that you know, need a bigger boost. Some people that don't need as much, but like the benefits of something like that, there's no, like, there's not really any harm. In doing something like that for your body.
Jess Gaertner: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Agree. Yeah, a hundred percent.
Becca Roses: Oh, and the, you just recently got one of these, but the castor oil pads.
Jess Gaertner: Oh my gosh. I'm, I was literally, that was what I was gonna ask you about next, because I'm staring at it right now. It's on my desk. How long have you been doing Okay, let's talk about this, because I even still, I'm like, I'm doing this and I still don't really even understand why, but I'm, I'm all in. I did it last night. I've been doing it like almost every night. I have a [00:44:00] thyroid. one, and then I have a liver one. Oh, that's awesome. Do you know, I mean, not to put you on the spot again, but like, do you know why and how? The why and how behind castor oil packs and like what they're all about or you just also going along with the,
Becca Roses: I like what I like to do with things is if I see something that's trending that I think could benefit myself or my clients. Cause I like to try it on myself first. Mm-hmm. Cause I'm like, I have to know if this actually works first before I recommend it. And it really does work. I've been using mine, so you're supposed to replace them every couple months. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. But I've been using a castor oil pack, which I think is the same one you're using. The same brand you're using for over a year now.
Jess Gaertner: Oh my gosh. So that you've been doing it for Yeah. Like this is not a new thing or practice to you?
Becca Roses: And I would say like regularly, like some weeks I don't use it at all. You know, like mm-hmm. Just like anything, like sometimes I, I reach for it and sometimes I don't. When I first got it, I used it consistently, like, every day for the two weeks that they [00:45:00] recommended doing it to see it, to see a change. Mm-hmm. And the why behind it, kind of the, the like, why do we even do that kind of thing is, well, a few reasons. You have the thyroid one and you have the liver one. I have the liver one. And you can support your liver detox with it. lymphatic drainage, even colon cleansing. And I knew personally that that was something that I needed help with my liver and like my. basically, my detox system has always needed help. Mm-hmm. I'm just, it's just an area where I need help. I know that. I know that about myself, so I started using it for that, and I saw what I saw happen, which I hope you do too, is I saw it actually helped my deep sleep as well. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Because I was waking up consistently, like I think it was like two or three in the morning. Mm-hmm. I would just wake up and I'm like, why am I waking up at two or three in the morning? Well, it turns out like even if you go back to kind of like traditional. Chinese medicine roots like that is like the time where your liver is detoxifying. [00:46:00] Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. And it was so interesting. Interesting to me to see a connection between that. When I put mine on, I usually like get really calm too, so it can actually help with like stress and like hormone balance and all that. I mean, there's like a list of reasons, but it's, it's really relaxing. It's one of those things that I say, you know, try it. If it works for you, awesome. If you love it, awesome. If you don't, then then leave it. But I feel like most people I've talked to have really enjoyed. And go slow with it. At first, I feel like I, I told you this on Instagram, but like one of my clients, you know, she used it and was like, whoa, this had definite detoxifying effect on me. Cause I had to run to the bathroom a bunch the next day. Wow. Since they like wear it, you know, everybody's different. Everyone's detox pathways are different. So I can wear mine overnight, like right off the bat. If you start out with like a couple hours, see how your body responds to it and then you can go further stretches. But they do recommend wearing it overnight.
Jess Gaertner: I will echo that. Like I have, I think [00:47:00] my epigenetics report, like I need, I have like some detox stuff in there cuz you had talked about like, yeah, it's important for me to have safer products and like, and limit environmental toxins and I was so. That's one of the reasons why. And then recently at my chiropractor, we did like a, a nervous system scan. And you know how chiropractic works is like your nervous system comes outta your spine, right? And so if your spine isn't healthy, like it, different areas of the spine where you have issues are impacting, can, can impact different like functions in the body. So like certain areas of the spine are connected to like liver. Issues or thyroid issues or you know, digestive, it's like all connected. And so in my scan, one of the biggest areas of impacts was like liver and digestion. Um, and thyroid. Thyroid was on there too, so they had also recommended the caster oil pack for that. But like I've been wearing it for the first couple times. I just [00:48:00] started with like an hour or two before bed. And then last night was the first time I wore it overnight and I slept like a baby. I really, so glad. Really, really did, and I can't really speak to any other, like, I haven't had any digestive issues with it, even like from the first get go and even overnight. But like, I can't, I, I don't, I hesitate to give any more feedback than that other than like, so far I haven't noticed anything bad. And like I had a great night of sleep. You had a great night of sleep. Yeah. So that's good. And oh, but one thing I did notice, Was my whoop. And this is interesting to me on a lot of different levels. So I haven't been working out like literally at all because of my back. And anytime I try and do stuff, it's just like my back is like, no, we're not, we're not ready for that. Like I've been walking here and there and doing my, my rehab exercises and that's about it. But over the last like week or so since I've been wearing the casserole pack and getting regular chiropractic, The coolest thing is happening. [00:49:00] My whoop is saying that my recovery has just been amazing and my heart rate variability, which is this like measure of, it's just a really important measure of like overall health and recovery. Yeah. Has been like steadily climbing, which is so That's so great. Intriguing to me because I haven't been. Doing anything other than, you know, those two new things to see that.
Becca Roses: Which was probably exactly what your body needed. And that's exactly, so that's such good confirmation.
Jess Gaertner: Yeah, and it's interesting too, the more I hear about like, so they were talking about in my chiropractic intake, like basically like I needed like a nervous system reset based off like my scans and just everything I was going through and. I don't know. I just, that's not something I've ever thought about or ever was interested in doing because, you know, for me, part of my identity has been like I'm a fit person who works out and I like to push myself. And, but that's like over the last couple of years I've been seeing all these, these signs, like, you know, I've been seeing drainage [00:50:00] issues and water retention and just recovery impairment and, you know, it. Been a long process of like uncovering these layers of why. Oh. And I think that sometimes when we slow down enough just, you know, like kind of like I'm doing right now just to ask our body like, what, what do I need? Like what, yeah, what would be helpful? Sometimes it truly is like, Rest, you know? Yeah. Like extended rest. And as hard as that's been for me, because, you know, I'm like, I wanna work out, like I wanna get my muscles back. Like I wanna do all this stuff. It's like there will be a ti I keep having to remind myself, like, there will be a time for that. Like, because, yeah. Do you ever feel like that? Like where it's like you're in it and you're like, I need to do this now. Like I, I need to do this now if I don't do it. You know what, I can never do it again. Or that moment is passed. Yeah. But it's like, oh my gosh, you knows so much time to that. We do.
Becca Roses: And that's a good mantra that that's something I've had to repeat myself when I, even on days when I have like really long, [00:51:00] I like have to repeat to myself, you have all the time in the world to do what you need to do. Like it, when it comes to anything, it's really. That's what we have. We have all the time. We have, we don't know how much time that is, but we, we have so much time and we always feel like we're in a rush, but I think that's just kind of the culture we, we live in. And I think it's important to know that when you're honoring your body and your body needs rest, and when we can truly start to like listen to her. It's just gonna pay dividends.
Jess Gaertner: Totally, totally. Oh my gosh. Well, on that note, I can't believe we've been talking for 48 minutes.
Becca Roses: Oh, no, not, not surprised. I know. We were like, ok, maybe like 30 minute cocktail.
Jess Gaertner: Yeah, no, that's, I I feel like we could continue talking about other stuff, but maybe we'll have you back on if you're up for it, depending on how Laura and Rusty, how the Bruner's are recovering and stuff. But this was delightful.
Becca Roses: This was so much fun.
Jess Gaertner: Thank you so much for last minute jumping in. Of course. I just appreciate you so much and okay, so if people haven't listened to your epigenetic episode, tell 'em, tell us where we can find [00:52:00] you and connect with you and just learn more from you.
Becca Roses: Yeah, I am basically on every platform as Mind Body Genes, so you can find me on Instagram, Facebook. My website is mindbodgenes.com, and you can connect with me there. I'm always hanging out on instagram.
Jess Gaertner: Awesome. Thank you so much, friend, for showing up. Thank you, and thanks everyone for tuning in. We'll see you next week.
Bye.
